NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION……A SMALL RECAP

FIRST LAW

A BODY CONTINUES TO BE IN A STATE OF REST OR OF UNIFORM MOTION IN A STRAIGHT LINE UNLESS AN EXTERNAL FORCE IS APPLIED ON IT.

SECOND LAW

THE RATE OF CHANGE OF MOMENTUM OF A BODY IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE FORCE APPLIED ON IT AND THIS CHANGE OF MOMENTUM TAKES PLACE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE APPLIED FORCE.

THIRD LAW

TO EVERY ACTION, THERE IS ALWAYS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.

MOMENTUM

DEFINITION

THE PRODUCT OF MASS AND VELOCITY OF THE BODY IS LINEAR MOMENTUM.

OR

THE MOMENTUM OF A BODY IN LINEAR MOTION IS THE PRODUCT OF THE MASS OF THE BODY AND ITS VELOCITY

THUS, P=MV

CHANGE IN MOMENTUM

THEN, ∆P=∆(MV)

RATE OF CHANGE OF MOMENTUM

THEN,
=

AND F= KMA

UNITS OF FORCE

  1. CGS UNIT=DYNE=ONE DYNE IS THAT FORCE WHICH WHEN ACTING ON A BODY OF MASS 1 GRAMME, PRODUCES AN ACCELERATION OF 1 CM IN IT.
  2. SI UNIT=NEWTON=ONE NEWTON IS THAT FORCE WHICH WHEN ACTING ON A BODY OF MASS 1 KG, PRODUCES AN ACCELERATION OF 1 M IN IT.

THE EQUATIONS OF MOTION

  1. v=u+at
  2. s=ut + ½ a
  3. v²=u²+2as
